Completion rate in a flipped classroom
When students come into my classroom, they are ready for the day's practice. However, I am currently reaching the students at about a 70% completion rate. This is good, but it's not good enough. For the students who have not watched the video and taken the notes, I have them come in during lunch to make it up or after school. During class, the students who have not watched the video and taken the notes are a little bit behind, but their group members do a good job of catching them up to speed.
Some tips to increase the completion rate:
Keep in mind that the vast majority of students aren't failing out of defiance - there is a reason. It may not be the best reason, but we don't know the complexity of our students' lives. If you remove excuses by making yourself available, you increase your odds at success!
Some tips to increase the completion rate:
- Make it part of their grade. Students are more likely to complete work if they will be held accountable
- Create a weekly/bi-weekly quiz based on the content of the videos
- Give extra credit for finding mistakes in the videos
- Give a benchmark prize (whoever can complete the most videos will be entered in a drawing)
- Give the option to come in during lunch or some other scheduled time in your classroom
