How to avoid a snagged line
As a disclaimer, I teach 8th grade algebra 1 to a group of very motivated students (with some stragglers, of course). In my class, we run a hybrid style of a flipped classroom. Videos are assigned 2-5 days ahead of time and students need to fill out a form using GoogleDocs or Weebly Forms. See examples of each below. As a way to have students remain accountable, they fill out the forms online that demonstrates a very basic understanding of the content and prove that they have actually watched the video. While they are watching the video, students take notes in their interactive notebooks and are frontloaded with the content before stepping into my classroom.
Things don't always go as planned. It's as simple as that. Sometimes, the big one gets away. It might have been poor tackle selection, poor preparation, or just a run of bad luck. Either way, giving up is the only way to guarantee that you won't feel success. The same is true with flipping your classroom. We don't have 30 years of research on this. Realistically, we don't have 5 years of good research. Right now, it's a lot of trial and error. Click below for a few topics that I have run into when trying to flip my classroom.
Completion Rate
Accessibility
Motivation
Cheating
When all is said and done, you're probably going to get a similar completion rate for the flipped videos as you would a regular homework assignment until you can build in the motivation to learn the content. It won't be perfect and it won't be easy. However, it's worth it, and the success that is felt when completion rate is high will validate all of the hard work that you put in.
