Clotheslines and Kids

I saw Robert Kaplinsky doing some fun clothesline work with his son and knew that I had just what it takes:

• A kid who's curious (in my case, two)
• A rope
• Paper
• Markers
• Chairs

So yeah, I put them all together and got some pretty incredible conversations going with my boys, six and four years old.

I was so thrilled to sit back and watch as the two boys wrestled with numbers on a number line, placing them and spacing them as more values got added. The first grader was conceptualizing space while his pre-K brother was demonstrating his knowledge of counting skills.

​I'm loving this idea and can't wait to do more.

One change I'd make is putting a shorter leash on the little guy; he ran out of steam too quickly.

Meanwhile, his brother went from zero to ten, ten to zero, and zero to eight. We're about to have more fun than I thought.
