Google Docs FINALLY Loves Math

Yep, you read that right. Thanks to John McGowan, math teachers are rejoicing once again. Earlier, I shared how he created a way for Google Form responses to include g(Math) formatting. One main issue is that it translates into LaTex and that script can only run 200 times per day. Problem solved? Oh yeah. He's one-upped himself:

If you're a tech-minded math/science teacher, this is about the moment that you want to fly out to Singapore and give this guy a big hug and offer him a beer. Anyways, this is how to get set up:

1. Open up a new Google Doc

2. Click on Add-Ons

3. Click on Get Add-Ons

4. Search for and download the g(Math) Add-On

5. Once you accept the permissions, here are your options:

6. Do the Happy Dance. For real. You can roll out templates, whether they're fro Doctopus or Google Classroom or student-created and have students use their own handwriting. It will take whatever you do and insert it as an image into the document. Don't know about you, but this is Happy Dance material. Oh, and dropping in a graph? Bonus.

7. Take a sip of that beverage you've been waiting to sip on when great free products come your way. In fact, take two sips, then thank John.

For reference, I whipped this up just to test it out. While my handwriting usually sucks, this isn't too bad.

*** DISCLAIMER ***
I am opposed to a paperless math classroom. In fact, I strongly believe that students need to get their hands dirty and work through problems. This is a way, in a setting with multiple devices, to switch things up and get some paperless responses. Maybe it's a 5 question quiz. Maybe it's a single drawing that students need to use to show that fractions are equivalent. But whatever it is, this is not a replacement, just an enhancement, of good teaching.

Happy "What Is McGowan Gonna Do NEXT" Fishing

PS - he's got something else in the works that'll blow your mind.

Erin, the iOS version won't work with the add on - BUT if you open up the document in Desktop version you can use the addon and it DOES do handwriting quite nicely

I created a Free Professional 'Math Editor' for teachers and students for Google Docs

The add-on is a free professional 'Mathematics Editor' used to build equations and insert the images into documents. The user can easily add variables, constants, operators, fractions, exponents, logarithms, limits, integrals, derivatives and matrix. Also the Editor has a built in Wizard to build complex equation.
