“Don't be afraid to talk, be afraid of staying quiet.”
― Eugene Lebid

As a student, I was always the one getting in trouble.  Nothing major, nothing invasive or mind boggling, but trouble nonetheless.  Quite frankly, I thought it was ridiculous that the whole class talks and I'm the only one getting pointed out and punished.  Maybe this was the puberty-driven mindset of mine and not so much of the truth, but every teacher was out to catch me talking or being off task.
As a teacher, this has become one of my strengths.  Being a voice for ideas and concepts that I'm passionate about have forged new discussions and brought in new ideas.  Using Twitter as the heart of my knowledge over the past year, it would be an understatement for me to say that I have learned "a lot" as an educator, a professional, and a person.  In reality, this Personal Learning Network (PLN) has provided me with the best professional development that has ever been presented.

During the melee of PD while on Twitter, an opportunity came up to present at something called the "Cue Rock Star Conference" aboard the USS Hornet July 31st and August 1st.

What the heck, why not apply? It would be an opportunity of a lifetime to share and learn in such a unique setting. Whether or not I get accepted to present, this trip is happening!

I was set on attending the conference for a few reasons:
  1. Low presenter:attendee ratio (1:10)
  2. 2 hour sessions that are hands on and interactive
  3. Authentic learning and sharing of ideas
  4. Collaborate with some of the best teachers you've ever been around
  5. A badass boat to search and explore!

Getting the email of acceptance to join the crew of EduCaptains for the USS Hornet this summer got me thinking... I've driven a boat.  Wouldn't it be cool to take it for a spin?  Just around the harbor.

Immediately, I had Top Gun quotes running through my head, only to realize that they've probably already been cliched beyond belief at this point.  Even still, it'll be a sotry worth telling while we're in the "Danger Zone"
Moving past that childhood memory, I checked out the presenters who are scheduled to rock out on the aircraft carrier in San Francisco.  This list is here with more details, but the names alone are impressive:

Jon Corippo
Frank Guttler
Mark Hall
Will Kimbley
Cheryl Morris
Sam Patterson
Pam Rickard
Catlin Tucker

I'm honored to be included in this entourage of pilots for a wave of education that has yet to reach its peak.  Not only are there Google Certified Teachers, Apple Distinguished Educators, and YouTube Star Teachers recognized in this list of superstar teachers, there are high quality individuals who will guarantee that your time and money will not be wasted floating 10 feet from the shore of San Francisco.  While our sessions may revolve around technology, the party that ensues on the boat is guaranteed to be epic.

CUE Rock Star is NOT individually:

An education conference
A technology conference
A place for you to meet new educators
An opportunity to grow as a professional
A vacation from the norm of slideshow presentations
A small group of amazing people
A party to come back home and tell stories about

No, no, no, it isn't any one single aspect of that list. There are plenty of professional developments and mini-conferences that address one or two of those aspects.  Instead, it is the entire list conglomerated into one boat of #EDUmazement and adventure as we discover new ways to teach, new ways to learn, and new ways to connect and communicate with professionals in our PLN.

To get signed up for the CUE Rock Star camps, go to http://rs.cuetoyou.net/home.  For more information about the party that you don't want to miss, follow me on Twitter and visit the Hornet's information page to get caught up.
