The Mayans Ran Out of Ink

It's really hard for me to believe that the Mayans chose December 21st, 2012 as the last day of human dominance on planet Earth.  Maybe it's ignorance, the superiority complex, or the naive notion that we just aren't done here.

Honestly, I think it's neither.  See, the Mayans never predicted that we would have Twitter, iPads, or the Internet.  Clearly, had they known this, our zombie apocalypse prediction would be postponed to a later date.  Maybe they just ran out of ink?  Maybe the system they were using just didn't have enough stone?  What if they would've had the internet to research things a little bit more.

Whatever their excuse may be, with all due respect to the Mayan prophecies, please leave my classroom off of the annihilation agenda.  This request is not made selfishly.  In fact, it's rather unselfish.  You see, we just started firing on all cylinders with a student BYOD network in my classroom and the kids are just too excited about school for it to end after Friday.

Maybe it's just a coincidence that the world is ending around the same time that my students realize that education can be fun?  Engaging?  Worth paying attention to?  Who knows.  Maybe it's more of a coincidence that the world is ending around the same time that Gangnam Style gets its own app (more likely).

Therefore, the Mayan calendar needs to be wrong.  I still need my students to see how Socrative can make their responses much more efficient.  They need to be able to experience TodaysMeet as a way to collaborate in an online forum that is easy to monitor and engaging.  The class needs to become proficient in flipping their own learning using screencasting apps.  As a whole, they need to learn to collaborate using Dropbox and Google Drive.

When it all gets boiled down to the necessities, I need more time.  My students need more time.  The Mayans need to get more ink.  Or maybe...
